The Centre has once again betrayed the people of Telangana. B N Srikrishna committee has been given time till December 31
this year to "examine the situation in Andhra Pradesh with reference to the demand for a separate state of Telangana as well
as the demand for maintaining the present status of a united Andhra Pradesh". The bracketing of the two competing demands
can be seen as putting the clock back on Telangana after the December 9 statement when home minister P Chidambaram announced
that a resolution would be moved in AP assembly to start the process of creation of the separate state.
Reversing its December 9 announcement on initiating a process for granting the statehood, the Centre on Friday bought
for itself time until the end of the year to revisit Telangana issue. Centre on Friday used the terms of reference of the
B N Srikrishna panel to make it plain that it was yet to take a call on the demand for the separate state of Telangana,
completing its backtracking on the December 9 announcement which was almost unanimously interpreted as its acceptance of the
partition of Andhra Pradesh.
The Telangana Students Joint Action Committee leaders who met at Osmania University after the seven-point ToR was announced
demanded that the panel be scrapped and the Central government introduce a Bill in Parliament for formation of Telangana,
and get it passed respecting the sentiments of people here.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) termed it a "betrayal of the people" and announced that all its 10 MLAs,
two MPs K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Vijayshanti and one MLC would tender their resignations, this time in the prescribed format,
on Saturday.
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member G Venkataswamy came out to oppose the ToR saying it did not talk about the
formation of a separate Telangana. Congress' Nizamabad MP Madhu Goud Yaskhi said he was not happy with the development
and reiterated his commitment to tender his resignation if the Centre did not deliver on the promise of a separate state.
