Warangal district  is surrounded by Karimnagar in the North , Nalgonda in the South, Khammam in the East and  Medak in the West directions respectively. Warangal was founded in 12th century by Kakati Prola Raju.Few say that it was called Vorkalli in 8th century and it was the capital of Sayeba kings of Tuluva Dynasty.It is believed that Tolemy called Warangal Konenkula. Another name is Akshali. Raghunatha Bhaskara called it Ekasila nagara in Aravalina kosam. Warangal district flourished for centuries with splendor and there are deep tanks, temples  and has historical importance.

Earlier this district was called as Orugallu. This place was under the rule of Sathavahana,  Chalukya and Kakatiya kings. The period of Kakatiya rule is termed as Golden Era.
