The rivers flowing through Adilabad district are Godavari River, Penganga, Pranahitha and Kadem and other minor rivers. Kadam dam was constructed at the place, where River Godavari joins with River Kadam. It is usually hot and dry because of southwest monsoon. It rains from June to September and the rain recedes from October. The land in the district is divided into red soil and black soil. The water sources to this district are Kadem Project, Vattivagu Project, Satnalavagu project, Saraswathi Canal, Sriram Sagar Projects, Penganga, Pranahitha and Chelamalavagu project. Pochampadu Reservoir on river Godavari caters the water supply to the farm fields.

The total irrigated areas in hectares presently are 42,000, as against 31,000 in the year 1956-57.

RIVER GODAVARI: Originally the proposal was to construct high Pochampad Dam across Godavari to utilize nearly 330 TMC feet of water from river Godavari. The Godavari north and south canals would irrigate about 20 Lakh acres of land to benefit farmers of Adilabad, Karimanagar, Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda districts.

PROJECTS

SRIRAM SAGAR PROJECT: Central water commission clearance was obtained in 1996 subject to forest clearance for 1210 acres. Administrative approval by the government was given in July 1996 for acquiring 229 acres

SRIRAM SAGAR PROJECT: Stage II was planned to utilize 40.28TMC feet of water to irrigate 5.87 lakh acres. It envisages the following irrigation projects.

Lower Penganga Project:This is a joint project of Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh across the river Pen Ganga near Chilkala Wadi in Yeotmal. It cultivates 2.38 lakh acres in Yeotmal, Chanda, Districts of Maharastra and 40,000 acres in Adilabad District of Andhra Pradesh.

It was also agreed by the states that the cost of work would be shared by the respective states on proportion of water utilization. However, this project is still pending for various reasons.

MANDAKINI CANAL: It is tail end of Saraswathi canal from km 77 to km 144 . This canal is passing through forest in Adilabad district. This project is still in the initial stages of identifying the land.
